The Backgammon

The game of backgammon is played by two people. It is played using a board that has 24 points (or spaces) marked on it. You begin with 15 checkers each. The game is then begun.

The roll of the dice determines your move. The goal of the game is to be the first player to bring his checkers back home and bear them off before the other player does.

Backgammon is one of the oldest games in existence, dating back some 5000 years and believed to have been developed by the ancient Egyptians. It is not a game of luck as many believe, but a strategic game of war; in many ways as difficult to master as chess or Go. A random element (luck) is certainly involved, but a champion player also uses the laws of probability, intuition, imagination and psychology to outwit his opponent

Backgammon has been around a long time, with origins dating back possibly 5000 years. The ancient Greeks played. So did the Romans. The game we know today was refined in England in the seventeenth century, which is also when it acquired the name backgammon. One significant innovation of the twentieth century was the addition of the doubling cube in the 1920s.

Backgammon enjoyed a huge resurgence in the 1970s, then again in the 1990s with the popularity of the Internet. Today, you can play online any time of the day or night with people from all over the world.
